Changing a fuse in a plug is an easy task which anyone can do to increase the longevity of their electronic devices at home. If your device has switched off and won’t turn back on without reason or fault, it could also mean the plug fuse needs to be replaced. But luckily, changing a fuse only takes a few simple steps which we’ll cover in this guide.

  • To change a fuse in a plug of a newer device, open the fuse carrier using a flathead screwdriver, replace the fuse and then push the carrier back in. Then plug the device back in to check it’s working.

  • To change a plug of an older device, firstly unscrew and remove the plug cover with a Phillips screwdriver, replace the fuse, and then screw the cover back on. Lastly, plug in the device and test it’s working.

Staying safe when changing a fuse

To make sure you stay safe when changing a fuse in a plug, you should:

  1. Turn off the power of the device at the mains before you start.

  2. Use the correct fuse and rating for the device’s plug.

  3. Never replace a fuse with an alternative like wire or foil.

  4. Keep your hands dry at all times.

  5. Opt for insulated tools.

  6. Undergo the project on a dry surface.

What tools are needed to change a plug fuse?

  • A new fuse

  • A screwdriver, but the type will depend on the age of your electronic device. You’ll need a Phillips screwdriver for an older device and a flathead screwdriver for a newer one.

How to identify the correct fuse rating for a specific appliance

You’ll need to check the appliance’s power or current rating which is usually found on its label.

If it states power (W): You’ll need to check the fuse rating is approximately the same as the voltage and then choose a standard fuse size above the chosen value.

If it states current (A): You’ll need a fuse slightly higher than the normal operating current.

You should always avoid a fuse rated higher than the appliance or the recommended guidance from the manufacturer.

Where is the fuse located in a standard UK 3-pin plug?

A standard UK 3-pin plug’s fuse is always located inside the plug on the brown (live) wire side, which is immediately behind the live pin.

Changing a fuse in a plug

How you change a fuse in a plug will depend on the age of the device. Below are the steps to replace a fuse in a standard household plug, both new and old.

Newer devices

Step 1: reveal the fuse

For newer devices, use a flathead screwdriver to tilt up the fuse carrier and reveal the fuse.

Step 2: replace the fuse

Switch out the old fuse for a new one by removing the existing fuse from the carrier, then clipping the new one into the fuse carrier.

Step 3: check the device

Now, push the fuse carrier back into the plug. Once the carrier is secure, it’s time to test if replacing the fuse has worked by inserting the plug back into the wall and seeing if the device is now working. If not, the device itself could be faulty.

Older devices

Step 1: release the plug’s cover

For older devices, use a Philips screwdriver to unscrew the front cover screws, which will release the back cover on the plug.

Step 2: switch out the old fuse

Replace the old fuse by removing it from the fuse holder and then clipping in the fresh one.

Step 3: re-fit the back plate

Once the new fuse is in place, re-fit the back plate to the plug and secure the screws on the front cover.

Step 4: check it’s working

Now, check if it works by plugging it back into a power outlet and turning it on. If the device isn’t working still, it could be that it’s got an internal fault.

If you’re unsure or the fuse keeps blowing, stop and seek a qualified electrician’s advice.

How to dispose of old fuses

You should never dispose of old fuses in household bins as this can cause a fire hazard. To dispose of old fuses safely, you should take them to your local waste recycling centre where they’ll have an electrical item section.

It’s as simple as that. We hope you’ve been able to successfully change your plug fuse with these easy-to-follow instructions. If you find that your device isn’t working still, we recommend contacting the manufacturer, especially if it’s new. If you found this article helpful, check out our guide on how to fit a socket.

FAQs

What if I can't easily open my plug casing to access the fuse?

If you can’t open the plug with ease, you shouldn’t try and force it as this can cause damage and expose live parts. We recommend replacing the plug itself if it’s completely sealed and not serviceable or getting a qualified technician to check or replace it.

Why do plug fuses blow frequently in an appliance?

More often than not, fuses blow consistently if an appliance is overdrawing current or is faulty, most likely down to an incorrect fuse rating, wiring issues or internal damage.

When should I consider replacing the entire plug instead of just the fuse?

Signs that you should replace your plug entirely include sealed, damaged overheated, loose or burnt pins or wires, or if your fuse continuously blows even when using the correct rating.
