How to Choose the Right Fridge Freezer
There are several things you need to consider when choosing a fridge freezer.
- The Size: Measure how much space you’ve got to work with, including height, width and depth, adding a few extra cm’s for ventilation and door clearance
- Capacity: How large is your family? Couples can manage with a 250 to 300 litre fridge freezer, whereas a larger family may need 300 litres or more. Plus, you’ll need to consider the fridge to freezer split.
- Energy Rating: To save on running costs, check you’re happy with the efficiency rating of your chosen model.
- Additional Features: Frost-free technology means you won’t have to undergo a defrosting mission, but this can increase their price.
- Freestanding/Integrated: It’s important to consider whether you want a fridge freezer that’s freestanding or integrated. This can depend on preferable noise levels, as well as whether you prefer the seamless look of it being tucked away behind a cabinet door, or your open plan kitchen would suit a freestanding option.
FAQs
How do you defrost a fridge freezer?
To defrost your fridge freezer, first switch off and unplug your freezer. Then, empty the contents of your appliance and store items in a cool box if necessary. Wait around 20 minutes before using an ice scraper to gently remove any large pieces of ice. Once all the ice has been removed, clean and dry your fridge freezer before replacing its contents and switching it back on.
What temperature should a fridge freezer be?
To keep your food safe and to prevent the growth of bacteria, your fridge freezer should be kept at a consistent temperature of between 3-5°C, and freezers should be kept at -18°C. To maintain this temperature, avoid leaving the doors open for extended periods and remove any obstructions which may stop the door shutting properly.
Which fridge freezer is best for me?
The best fridge freezer for you will depend on the size of your kitchen and your needs. For busy households with plenty of space, a large, American-style fridge freezer is perfect, offering a large storage capacity with multiple drawers and shelves.
For smaller kitchens where space is at a premium, an integrated fridge freezer allows you to increase functionality and storage space without cluttering your kitchen.
What is an integrated fridge freezer?
An integrated fridge freezer refers to a type of fridge freezer that’s built into the cabinetry in a kitchen. They achieve this by being concealed by a cabinet door that matches the rest of your kitchen units, so it doesn’t have its own finished front but is fitted into tall housing.
Can you lay down a fridge freezer to transport?
It’s recommended you transport a fridge freezer upright, but if you have no choice but to lay it down, make sure it’s on its side (the one without hinges, so the door remains securely closed).
How heavy is a fridge freezer?
It depends on the fridge freezer type and model. As a general guide:
- Under-counter fridge freezers: 25-40kg
- Freestanding models: 50-70kg
- Tall or large frost-free: 70-90kg
- American style: 90-130kg
