Garden trellis panels are versatile and can serve both decorative and functional purposes. They can be used to create beautiful and visually appealing garden structures, as well as provide support for climbing plants and to create privacy screens.
Trellis panels are typically made from wood, such as cedar or pressure-treated pine, due to their durability and natural aesthetics. They are customisable and you can paint them using wood paint to get the look you’re after. You can get different designs such as fan shaped and those with pre hung planters attached to the trellis ready for you to plant your favourite seeds.
Installing garden trellis panels is a relatively straightforward process. Start by determining the desired location, making sure there’s enough space for the panel to be securely attached. Dig holes for the fence posts if necessary or use brackets or cable ties to attach the panel to an existing structure. Secure the panel using screws or nails if necessary, ensuring it is level and sturdy. Finally, consider adding climbing plants to enhance the appearance and functionality of the trellis panel.
They don’t provide total privacy due to their open gaps at the top. However, they can offer partial privacy but are often used to soften a boundary rather than block it completely. For more privacy, try adding climbing plant to gradually fill the gaps.
Climbing or vining plants are best as they can attach themselves and be easily trained upwards. Popular choices for this include ivy, clematis, honeysuckle and jasmine. These options tend to be low maintenance and ideal for consistent screening.
If your fencing doesn’t include posts, you can screw timber battens to the fence panels or rails in a vertical fashion, so you can then attach the trellis to the battens using brackets or external screws. You’ll need to leave a small gap between the trellis and fence for airflow and moisture reduction purposes.
Yes, you can absolutely install a trellis on top of your fencing. It’s a common way to enhance privacy and support climbing plants.
If you’ve mounted a trellis onto your fence panels, it may count towards your fence height, depending on your local authority guidelines. It’s important to keep in mind that the maximum height for fencing without planning permission is 2m (6ft 6in).
