Transitioning to an electric vehicle is smoother when you’ve got the right charging kit on hand. Before buying, follow these steps to pick the perfect cable:
- Verify your car’s inlet (most modern electric cars use a Type 2 inlet).
- Match your charger’s power rating by checking whether your home charger or local public post is single-phase or three-phase.
- Pick the right length by measuring the distance from your charge point to your car’s charging port. 5m is usually sufficient for most driveways, but 10m prevents awkward cable stretching.
- Store connectors off damp ground to stop dirt damaging the electrical pins.

FAQs
What are the different types of EV charging cables?
The main types of EV cables are Mode 2 and Mode 3 cables.
- Mode 2 chargers plug straight into standard 3-pin household or weatherproof 13A outdoor socket. These are ideal for overnight home charging when a dedicated wall box is not available.
- Mode 3 chargers connect directly from a wall box or public charger to your car’s Type 2 inlet. This offers much faster single-phase or three phase charging times.
What are EV charging cables?
EV charging cables are insulated, heavy-duty electrical cables that deliver power from a power source to an electric vehicle’s battery pack.
Do electric cars come with charging cables?
Most new electric cars come with at least one charging cable. This is usually Mode 3 for public and wall box charging.
