How to paint louvre doors
We’d recommend you remove the door prior to painting. Due to the style of slatted doors, it can be difficult to avoid paint drips getting through the slats when painting them.
- Remove the door from the frame and lay it flat on a work surface or a large, clean dust sheet to prevent any paint getting on your surfaces.
- If your louvre door is already painted or finished, you should sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth out any imperfections and create a rough texture for better paint adhesion.
- Wipe away any dust with a clean damp cloth.
- Apply a coat of paint primer to the entire surface of the door, including the slats, using a paint brush or roller. Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Once the primer is dry, apply a coat of paint using a paintbrush or roller. Work in thin, even strokes, starting from the top of the door and working your way down. Be careful not to overload the slats with paint to prevent drips and runs. Allow the first coat to dry completely.
- Depending on the colour and type of paint you're using, you may need to apply multiple coats for full coverage. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next one. If necessary, lightly sand between coats to smooth out any imperfections.
- Once the final coat of paint is dry, consider applying a clear protective coat, such as a polyurethane sealer, to protect the paint and provide a durable finish – this will be especially useful if the door will be used on something like a boiler cupboard where it’ll be exposed to warm air.
- Once the paint and protective coat are fully dry, reattach the door to its hinges and reinstall it in its original location.
