How to pot a plant?
- Start by choosing the right plant pot. Make sure it’s slightly larger than the current one and has drainage holes at the bottom to prevent water from sitting in the soil. Cover the drainage holes with a small layer of gravel or broken crocks to help with drainage.
- Add a layer of fresh, suitable compost for your plant type into the pot.
- Carefully remove the plant from its existing pot, gently loosening the roots if they are tightly packed.
- Place the plant in the new pot so it sits at the same soil level as before, then fill around it with compost, firming it down lightly to remove air pockets.
- Water the plant thoroughly after potting to help it settle into its new home. If the soil sinks after watering, you can top it up a little.
- Place the plant in the best spot, ensuring it has the right light and temperature for its needs.
How do you measure a plant pot?
The most common measurement is the diameter. Use a tape measure across the top of the pot from one inner edge to the other to get this measurement. You should also measure the depth (or height) of the pot, from the rim down to the base. This is important for plants with longer roots, as they need enough space to grow comfortably.
Are plant pots recyclable?
It depends entirely on what they’re made from and your local recycling rules. Most plant pots are made from different types of plastic, and not all of them are accepted in household recycling bins. Check for recycling symbols and your council’s guidelines.
